RESEARCH:
Dr. Aktas is involved in the design and manufacturing of a laboratory-scale carbon steel physical model of a seawater compensated ballast tank and pipeline, which will be used for routine experimentation. These models will be easy to disassemble and can accommodate removable carbon steel coupons. Such a set-up will create multiple surfaces for microbial colonization. Coupons will be periodically exchanged and shared amongst team members as dictated by experimental needs. These tests will be conducted in conjunction with state of the art analytical procedures including a battery of molecular microbiological techniques, sophisticated analytical instrumentation, electrochemical corrosion monitoring, and robust surface imaging technologies.
